Kory Sheets and Glenn Coffee

Being from Lafayette,IN (home of Purdue) and being born and bred a Purdue fan. I loved the thought of us drafting him. When we signed him as a UDFA i was crazy excited. dude's the real deal. anytime you can break records put up by Mike Alstott and Leroy Keyes, you know you can ball. I loved having him in Black N Gold and now having him in Red N Gold. Boiller Up and Go Niners!

Talk about a shot in the arm for our RB corps...well done, Scot. Coffee shows every sign of being a rising star...runs hard, loves contact, should beef up to @ 220 by 2010 season. Sheets gives us that breakaway guy we haven't had in a long time...I like the combo of Gore - Coffee - Sheets.

If they sign Sheets to the 53-man roster, I think that could be an amazing triple-threat with those backs. You have your main guy in Gore, a bruiser and downhill runner in Coffee, and a change-of-pace guy and a burner in Sheets. Excellent pickups.
I doubt both sheets and coffee are on the 53 man roster. In a competition of RB's I would give the edge to sheets over coffee. I like the more explosive back. But coffee makes the team because he is a third round pick. I would rather Mrob get the axe and sheets and coffee stick around.

sheets is a straight up BALLA ! we MUST keep gore, coffee, sheets, and m-rob.. but clayton has to get the boot.. keeping 4 RB's would mean that battle and zeigler would most likely get cut as well since we're also keeping 3 TE's..

why m-rob, solely because of special teams?

let's make a list of our special team specialists:

-ulbrich
- m-rob
- jason hill (i recall a couple plays he made)

pretty much, he's been our best special teamer for the past 2 years and keith lewis just left so i could see him staying.. i doubt hill will play special teams because i could see him playing the slot this year.. unless brandon jones plays slot which i'm not hoping for..

Keith was our best ST coverage guy
We let him go
M-Rob is now, but ST guys are easily replaced
M-Rob has no real value outside of ST. So M-Rob gets the axe

Cause he is good at everything except running the football?

Sheets is better than Clayton. No way they don't take him over Clayton.

Pretty much. I can see Sheets filling in for MRob in the ST game.
Let's look at the Raye offense and the Rathman effect in evaluating the RB situation.

Gore, Robinson and Sheets are the best receivers. Coffee is largely an unknown in this area. Norris, Keasey and Clayton are poor receivers. With the emphasis on the running game and a QB who excels at short-range accuracy and quick decisions to check down, Gore, Robinson and Sheets look very solid.

Rathman perfected the art of being an excellent lead blocker, a dependable receiver and a stonewall in pass protection. He can't improve Norris' or Keasey's hands. But lead blocking leverage and pass protection can be taught. Robinson has Rathman-like skills, and I expect Robinson to benefit more from Rathman's presence, than any other player. I wouldn;t be surprised to see Robinson get 40% of the 2-back, offensive snaps at FB, due to his versatility and the unpredictability that implies for the opposing defense.

Sheets, who has chafed with coaches at Purdue, will benefit from Rathman's no-nonsense coaching, because Rathman has the pelts on the wall. Sheets also has noteworthy ST return skills, which Clayton, Norris and Keasey do not. I see Sheets easily beating out Clayton and Keasey for a roster spot, due to his versatility. Offensively, I could see him being used in some 3rd down, single back, packages.

Coffee will really help to keep Gore fresh for the 2nd half of the season (and hopefully the playoffs). Pass protection skills will be Rathman's early assignment for Coffee. I see Coffee being primarily used, in his rookie year, to either carry the rock or to pass protect. Hopefully, Coffee will see 10 or so offensive snaps per game, starting in Game 1. Plenty of time to develop and utilize Coffee as a receiver later.

RB depth chart: Gore, Coffee, Sheets
FB depth chart: Norris, Robinson
Not in the picture: Clayton, Keasey
I believe that Clayton has exhausted his PS eligibility.

I think (hope), it's going to be more like Gore (obviously) as our top guy with Coffee playing a solid #2 and short yardage role. Sheets as the change of pace guy and #3, and MRob as a special teamer.

Keasey and Clayton are gone. If it wasn't for special teams, MRob would be too. He's done as runner.

Norris is solid at receiving the ball. He has had NFL experience as a kick returner and every time we did throw him the ball when he was last here, he did well.

Norris is very close to Tom Rathman in terms of all around skills. Rathman was a heavier runner than Norris is but don't underestimate Norris' catching ability.
