is it customary to not be able to pick up and start a player before his game starts?

from the free agent list? If you get a player from the free agents he isnt available until the next day

You can only pick up players to play the following day, not right before a game. This isn't fantasy football

So you're just ass out if 1 of your players is a game time no go.

I know I really haven't watched any games at all this year, or followed the score....I do know I'm in 1st place in this league....with only two waiver pickups this year
