The San Francisco 49ers became the first team in NFL history to end the season with more than three wins after starting 0-9. No other team that started 0-9 had better than a 3-13 record to finish the season. The 49ers win on Sunday boosted their record to 6-10. They finished the season on a league-best five-game winning streak. Much of the late season success...

The 49ers will wrap up the 2017 season with a tilt against the LA Rams in Los Angeles at 1PM. The Niners are among the hottest teams in the NFL right now, having won their last 4 games under the guidance of quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. A win would give the 49ers a 5 game winning streak to end the season, their longest streak since the 2013 season under Jim Harbaugh. They'll have to do it against many of the Rams backups, as Rams head coach Sean McVay has indicated he is resting starters Jared Goff, Todd Gurley and Aaron Donald, among others. The Rams have locked up the NFC West and are locked into the 4 seed, at worst and will get at least one home game in the postseason, prompting the decision from McVay. 49ers wideout Marquise Goodwin has a...

The 49ers fell to 1-10 at the hands of the Seattle Seahawks at Levi's Stadium on Sunday. It was the 49ers' eighth straight loss to Seattle, dating back to 2014. It was a one-point game at the half, with the 49ers trailing 7-6. The Seahawks pulled away in the second half, outscoring the 49ers 17-0. Russell Wilson provided most of the offense for Seattle, going...

The 49ers will take on the Seattle Seahawks today at 1:05PM (PST) at Levi's Stadium. Seattle currently has a 7 game win streak against the 49ers. The 49ers have not won back to back games since November 2014. The following players will be inactive for today's game: Victor Bolden WR Trent Brown OT Adrian Colbert DB Leger Douzable DE D.J. Jones DT Aaron Lynch DE Pita Taumoepenu...

The 49ers dropped another close contest, this time to Washington 26-24 in a back and forth game. Washington opened the game by scoring 17 straight points before the 49ers benched starting quarterback Brian Hoyer in favor of rookie CJ Beathard, who led the ensuing scoring drive right before the half to cut it to 17-7. The 49ers came out in the...

The 0-5 49ers travel to face Washington, who is currently 2-2 on the season. The 49ers are coming off of two narrow overtime losses to the Cardinals and Colts, respectively, and have not won a regular season game since December 24, 2016. They look to defeat a Washington team that has won two out its last three games and almost defeated the Chiefs in Kansas City. Many look at this game as the Kirk Cousins Bowl. The Washington quarterback has been strongly linked to the 49ers since January, but was franchise tagged for the second year in a row. Speculation is that Cousins may land in San Francisco next year, when he becomes a free agent. 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan was Cousins' former offensive coordinator in Washington before moving on to Atlanta for the last two...

The 49ers lost to the Minnesota Vikings 32-31 after a spirited comeback by the Vikings' reserves. However, much of the work by the starters was of note. The 49ers' first-team offense set the tone early by starting quickly and scoring on its first two drives. Quarterback Brian Hoyer completed his first eight passes (including two touchdowns) and was 12-17 for...

The Kyle Shanahan Era started with a win, albeit in Week 1 of the preseason. The 49ers fell behind early, giving up an opening drive touchdown to the Alex Smith-led Chiefs. The starters on offense only played halfway through the first quarter, with quarterback Brian Hoyer going 1-4 for three yards and running back Carlos Hyde having two carries for 0...

The 49ers held their annual open practice for fans today and the turnout was large - an estimated 25,319 fans attended the practice held at Levi's Stadium. This definitely wasn't anything like last year at Kezar Stadium, which was neat in its own right because of the location, but the football played there that day was downright awful. This year, it was a fully padded practice. 49ers GM John Lynch had indicated that it would be a different type of practice this year - and it was - complete with big hits, big plays and significantly more energy from both players and fans. I had a chance to speak with Jed York and he said that he's excited about this year and the future and appreciated the fan turnout. Here are some notes from today: Malcom Smith and...

It looks like Jed York has pushed all of his chips to the center of the table with the hiring of former All-Pro safety John Lynch as general manager - who has no previous front office experience - and the decision to pair him with incoming rookie head coach Kyle Shanahan by offering them matching 6 year deals. The question is: Did he do the right thing and is it even that big of a gamble? Of course, the answer to that question may not be known for years. For now, we can all agree that the current arrangement is far better than it was with former GM Trent Baalke. As my colleague Michael Fitch pointed out, Lynch is the anti-Baalke. York had no choice but to make drastic changes...

The 49ers and Jed York had no choice. Trent Baalke had written his own ticket out of town after numerous bad drafts, failures to bring in impact free agents and generally poor performance as the team's general manager. The Niners concluded arguably their worst season in franchise history with a 25-23 loss to the Seattle Seahawks today and the writing was on the wall before the game had even started. Jay Glazer reported that the 49ers had made the decision to fire Baalke and informed him two days prior to today's tilt. Baalke himself confirmed as much on the KNBR pregame show. Essentially, the 2016 season seemed like a waste. Baalke probably should have been fired at the...

Everyone believes that San Francisco 49ers general manager Trent Baalke is on the hot seat. In our latest Round Table, our staff was asked when they believe Baalke might get fired. The 49ers are off to a 1-5 start and riding their first five-game losing streak since starting the 2010 season 0-5. Zain Naqvi The organization seems aware that a change needs to be made. To me, the fact that the team didn't spend heavily in the free agent market leads me to believe that Baalke didn't have free reign and was told to hold his cards - possibly so that the next GM would have the luxury of a lot of cap space. Tom Gamble was brought in during the 2015 offseason and was given the title of Assistant GM in July. This is interesting for a franchise that has...

Barely a month into the NFL season, with everything hanging in the balance, the 49ers needed to change something to try and provide some sort of spark. Well, here goes nothing... Colin Kaepernick has been named the starter at quarterback for Sunday's game against the Bills. With the recent play of the now benched Blaine Gabbert, the team really had no choice. Gabbert was near the bottom of the league among starting QB's in YPA (5.9), completion percentage (58%), last in yards per game (178.0) and third to last in QB Rating (69.6). The bottom line is that Gabbert clearly wasn't getting the job done and after 4 straight losses, head coach Chip Kelly had to make the...

In our latest Round Table, our staff was asked if San Francisco 49ers quarterback Blaine Gabbert should be benched following three weeks of play. Gabbert has completed 55.2-percent of his passes and averaged 177.3 yards, a touchdown, and an interception per game. That's an average passer rating of about 69.4. Zain Naqvi Bench him. A lot of people had hope for Blaine Gabbert to come out strong this season after his showing in 8 games last year. However, he's pretty much the same guy that he's been his entire career: inaccurate, inconsistent and unable to make all of the throws. Gabbert is the 3rd worst rated quarterback in the league, has the third worst completion percentage and is spearheading an offense that leads the league in 3 and...

It was another game in the Pacific Northwest, and it was another embarrassing loss for the 49ers. The theme has become all too common in the past few years when going up to Seattle: unprepared team, bad defense, really bad offense, blowout losses and Pete Carroll joyfully giggling and skipping down the Seahawks' sideline. The last time the 49ers won in Seattle was in 2011. Give the Seahawks credit, they do this to a lot of teams. They expose weaknesses, they play aggressively and the embarrass teams that are lesser than them at home. This version of the 49ers became the latest on that list. There are a lot of fingers to be pointed; the defense gave up 2 very quick scores that immediately put the team in a hole, the defensive line (which was supposed to be a...

The 49ers began the Chip Kelly Era by pitching a 28-0 shut out against the Los Angeles Rams. Kelly became the 6th straight 49ers head coach to win the season opener in his first season with the team. The Niners have now won their last 6 regular season openers, the longest current streak in the NFL. No one really knew what to make of the Chip Kelly hire. As I mentioned last week, the team was going into this season with more questions than answers. We can all agree that what we saw last night was a step in the right direction. Blaine Gabbert wasn't perfect, or great, or even really good. He had a sub-par game (he was worse than his stats indicated) and the offense...

On the eve of the 49ers first regular season game of 2016, the team faces more questions than it has answers. We can only hope that this season will prove those answers. This season will be different for the 49ers - that's what we're telling ourselves. It can't be worse than last year's debacle. The team went 5-11 last year but was clearly worse than their record showed. There were 2 missed field goals by (the now unemployed) Robbie Gould and Greg Zuerlein, as well as a very curious decision by Falcons coach Dan Quinn to kick a field goal when down by 4 from the 1 yard line late in the 4th quarter that contributed to those 5 wins. This year, there are some big questions surrounding the team. How will the quarterback situation pan out? Which one of the wide...

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick has been protesting what he calls "unjust" actions in this country by refusing to stand during the pre-game National Anthem. And his protest will continue. "I'll continue to sit," said Kaepernick on Sunday. "I'm going to continue to stand with the people that are being oppressed. To me this is something that has to change. When there's significant change and I feel like that flag represents what it's supposed to represent, this country is representing people the way that it's supposed to, I'll stand." In our latest Round Table, our team of writers was asked to share their thoughts on the Kaepernick controversy that has been dominating the headlines in recent days – and will likely continue to do so. Jesse...

The 49ers lost 21-10 to the Packers in their dress rehearsal for the regular season. It was a rough game for the 49ers in all phases. The offense was particularly bad, as the Niners really only had one sustained drive where quarterback Blaine Gabbert hit wide receiver Quinton Patton for a touchdown (statistically, it was a run). On a night that was much anticipated, the Niners didn't look particularly inspiring. It wasn't all bad, but it was awfully hard to see some good in what was easily Chip Kelly's worst preseason game as 49ers coach thus far. Stock Up: OLB Tank Carradine Tank Carradine continued his strong preseason with another sack Friday night. He's been consistently getting to the quarterback and looks much quicker after...

For the first time since 2004, the 49ers held a training camp practice at Kezar Stadium in San Francisco. For those who don't know, Kezar was the 49ers' first home and the team played there until 1970, after which they moved to Candlestick Park. It is a place with the type of character and quirkiness that one would expect out of a structure that resides in San Francisco. The unique setting provided an opportunity for fans to attend the only open practice of 2016. I too had a chance to attend this practice alongside my colleague, Aaron Erickson. While the setting was memorable, there were few plays to remember, as 49ers beat writer Matt Maiocco noted. It was mostly a vanilla...
