As mentioned before in previous attempts at this, any mock draft prior to the free agency period is foolhardy at best. That, of course, hasn't stopped me from putting one together, less than one week away from the start of free agency-frenzy. Please consider that this mock is not necessarily a reflection of what I want to see happen or even what I think teams should do (that is a completely different exercise). Rather, it is based on what I believe teams will do. I also attempt to explain the reasons behind each selection, specifically predicting/projecting what I think teams will do as a result of the impending free agency period (key gains and losses being the determinant factor). 1) Cleveland Browns - Saquon Barkley, RB - Penn State In this...

The defensive backs closed out the final day of the 2018 NFL combine and, as a group, they did not disappoint. Winners Derwin James - S, Florida State (6'2", 215) Displaying a rare blend of size, speed, and athleticism (4.48 in the 40, a 40" vertical and an 11' broad jump), James had network commentators comparing him to current elite NFL players like the Kansas City Chiefs' All-Pro safety, Eric Barry, and the Jacksonville Jaguars' All-World cornerback, Jalen Ramsey. Though that's incredibly high praise, it's not entirely off-the-mark, but more importantly for James, he may have very well locked up a spot in the top 15. Denzel Ward - CB, Ohio State (5'11", 183) Ward, who many see as the #1 available...

Day 3 of the NFL Combine saw defensive prospects take the field for the first time, and they didn't disappoint. Edge rushers in particular dominated today, and the feel-good story of yesterday continued to make news with a record-setting performance. Winners Shaquem Griffin - LB, Central Florida (6'0", 227) After thrilling the crowd in the weight room (and fans across the nation) on Saturday, Griffin (who lost his left hand in childhood) took to the field on Sunday and proceeded to run a 4.38 in the 40-yard dash, setting a combine record for linebackers. In an under-reported aspect to his day, he also posted a time of 6.88 in the 3-cone drill (a test of short area quickness), which placed him in the top 5 among all linebackers this year....

Day 2 of the 2018 NFL Combine saw quarterbacks, receivers and tight ends take the field. Though a few big-name prospects showed well, it was a pair of lesser-known prospects that really stood out on the last day of offensive drills. However, the day was capped off by the stories of two prospects that are, unfortunately, headed in opposite directions. One who will take the field tomorrow in defensive drills with a ton of momentum on his side despite a major physical limitation, and the other who was sent home today because of a potentially serious health concern. Winners Mike Gesicki - TE, Penn St. - (6'5", 247) For the second straight day, a former Nittany Lion stood out among his peers by putting up eye-opening numbers at...

Day 1 of the 2018 NFL combine is in the books, and as in all things, there were winners and losers. How much, if at all, will today's performances impact a prospect's draft status remains to be seen. However, it's clear that some prospects (and teams) were able to shine brighter than others today. Winners Saquon Barkley, RB - Penn St. Barkley was easily the star of the show today. The former Penn State phenom was already a lock as a top-5 pick, but at 6'0", 233 pounds, he ran an official 40-time of 4.40 time (second only to the much smaller Nyheim Hines), had a vertical jump of 41", and tied Nick Chubb for the most bench presses at 29, proving that he is a generational running back talent. Though Barkley is still not the favorite to go...

Disclaimer: Any NFL mock draft before the free agency period is foolhardy at best. That doesn't make it any less fun to create, but it's worth noting (for those that take these things a little too seriously) that this early take will change dramatically in the next few months. 1) Cleveland Browns - Saquon Barkley, RB - Penn St. Sure, Sam Darnold is the obvious choice here, but with a likely veteran addition (e.g., A.J. McCarron or a trade for Alex Smith), they can use their #1 overall pick to grab the draft's best overall player, then grab a young QB at #4. 2) New York Giants - Sam Darnold, QB - USC Because "Browns gonna Brown," the Giants can land, arguably, the top QB in the draft. 3) New York Jets (via IND) Josh Rosen, QB...

The mock draft landscape has changed drastically in less than a week. Once populated by the Tennessee Titans and the Cleveland Browns, the top two selections in next week's NFL Draft are now owned by the Los Angeles Rams and the Philadelphia Eagles thanks to a couple of blockbuster trades. Here's a look at how the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft might shape up based on current needs for each NFL team. The draft kicks off on Thursday, April 28th at the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago. Version 2.0 of my mock draft can be found here. 1) Los Angeles Rams - Jared Goff, QB, California The Rams choose the upside of Goff over...

With the NFL Scouting Combine complete, here's a look at how the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft might shape up based on current needs for each NFL team. Of course, things will change after the free agency period so there will be more to come at that point. The first round kicks off on Thursday, April 28th at the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago. Version 1.0 of my mock draft can be found here. 1) Tennessee Titans - Laremy Tunsil, OT, Mississippi No change here. Titans still need protection for Mariota. 2) Cleveland Browns - Carson Wentz, QB, North Dakota State Solidified his position at...

Now that the NFL season is officially over, we can start looking forward to 2016. What better way to do that than with our first mock draft? Things will change after the free agency period so there will be more to come at that point. In the meantime, let's take a look at how the first round might shape up based on current needs. 1) Tennessee Titans - Laremy Tunsil, OT - Mississippi Drafting Tunsil allows Taylor Lewan to move to RT, solidifying the Titans o-line. 2) Cleveland Browns - Carson Wentz, QB - North Dakota State Hue Jackson goes with Wentz over Goff. 3) San Diego Chargers - Jalen Ramsey, DB - Florida...
