Robinson will embrace RB role; Free agent signings

May 1, 2006 at 7:33 AM--

The following is a reprint of yesterday's article with free agent updates:

Ray Fittipaldo, of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, reports San Francisco 49ers RB Michael Robinson said he will embrace his role as a running back.

Robinson added, "I won't resist the chance because I understand the way the world works. I think for you to be successful on any level you have to be a football player first. You can't just limit yourself to whatever role you want to play." He said he will be used as a third-down running back and a slot guy who would come out of the backfield to do some thing. The team has said they would give him a shot at quarterback.

Free agent signings begin

Right after the NFL Draft, teams scramble to contact players that were not taken during the seven rounds. The 49ers have already started their part.

The Los Angeles Times reports the San Francisco 49ers have agreed to terms with undrafted rookie free agent P Tom Malone (USC).

ScarletKnights.com reports that the 49ers have signed undrafted rookie free agent WR Chris Baker of Rutgers.

The Daily News Journal reports undrafted rookie free agent DE Bobby Payne of Middle Tennessee State has backed out of his deal with the Dallas Cowboys and signed with the San Francisco 49ers. Now that's what we like to hear.

What is Brandon Staley's role with the 49ers?

By David Bonilla
Mar 26

Following the dismissal of Steve Wilks, Brandon Staley interviewed for the San Francisco 49ers' vacant defensive coordinator job. Opting to go with internal candidate Nick Sorenson allowed the team to maintain continuity while entrusting the defense to a play-caller very familiar with the scheme the 49ers want to deploy. Sorenson previously worked with former defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans and served as an assistant with the Seattle Seahawks, so that familiarity gave him the edge. Where did that leave Staley? The 49ers hired him, too. However, Staley won't serve as the team's defensive coordinator. Right now, he has the title of assistant head coach. He will be heavily involved in game-day planning. Speaking to reporters at the NFL owners

He addressed multiple topics, from coaching moves, to new rules, to free agency additions and losses. On Monday, GM John Lynch met with the media and answered questions himself. So they have given us some things to discuss during the offseason. We opened the 49ers Webzone Mailbag this week to answer your questions. Some were related to the topics Shanahan and Lynch discussed. Others were not. Let's jump in and see what is on your mind. Do the 49ers add a starting safety? Who would be the best fit, and is Talanoa Hufanga's job safe? - Dave B. It wouldn't surprise me if the 49ers added another safety in free agency. In fact, I'd say it's

After falling just short of championship glory in February, the San Francisco 49ers are eyeing another opportunity in Super Bowl 59, and oddsmakers are backing their ambitions. The latest defeat was the second unsuccessful Super Bowl trip of the Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch era. Now, the Niners own the best odds in the league (+550) to finally hoist the Vince Lombardi Trophy once more. Super Bowl 59 will be held on Sunday, February 9, 2025, at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana. The team that dashed the 49ers' championship dreams in February, the Kansas City Chiefs, boast the second-best odds (+600) in the NFL to win Super Bowl 59. Among the NFC West teams, the Los Angeles Rams have the next-best odds after the 49ers, with distant +3500 odds,

USA Today grades 49ers' initial free-agency moves

By David Bonilla
Mar 21

Nate Davis of USA Today Sports recently published his free-agency grades for each NFL team. It's been over a week since the start of the new league year, when players no longer under contract are allowed to sign with other organizations, hoping to prove to their former teams that letting them walk was a mistake. While the San Francisco 49ers didn't make any attention-grabbing additions like they did last year with the Javon Hargrave signing, they did shake things up along the defensive line. The Niners bid farewell to their longest-tenured player, Arik Armstead, releasing him for salary cap savings
