Here are some observations from the 49ers first padded practice of the 2017 season.

Reuben Foster, who's working with the third team, jumped a quick slant route for an interception and returned it for a defensive touchdown.

Cam Inman noted linebacker NaVorro Bowman looked 'healthy, rangy.'

Rookie Chanceller James from Boise State notched another interception today.

Arik Armstead had three 'sacks' today, Aaron Lynch had two, and Elvis Dumervil had one.

After practice, Armstead mentioned he's down to 275 pounds to play the LEO position. He said it's the lightest he's been since high school.

Fans can breathe a sigh of relief. Reuben Foster said his surgically-repaired shoulder is "not a problem."

Eric Reid rolled his ankle and limped to the locker room. He appeared for the next series, but team trainers held him out of practice shortly thereafter. Head coach Kyle Shanahan said, "I know it was an ankle-type deal, but I'm not sure of the severity, whether it was low or high." Shanahan expected to find out more information about the injury this afternoon.

Shanahan stated the 49ers would have two joint practices with the Denver Broncos prior to their preseason game.

Rashard Robinson had a rough period of one-on-one drills today. Pierre Garçon beat him on a stutter-and-go route to open the session, and Marquise Goodwin also beat Robinson on the same route.

Some fans were at practice today. It looked like the team set up small bleachers with shade for people to observe. Later, Shanahan and general manager John Lynch invited the guests down to the field to get a closer view of the action.

Nate Davis of USA Today Sports recently published his free-agency grades for each NFL team. It's been over a week since the start of the new league year, when players no longer under contract are allowed to sign with other organizations, hoping to prove to their former teams that letting them walk was a mistake. While the San Francisco 49ers didn't make any attention-grabbing additions like they did last year with the Javon Hargrave signing, they did shake things up along the defensive line. The Niners bid farewell to their longest-tenured player, Arik Armstead, releasing him for salary cap savings

By David Bonilla

The San Francisco 49ers likely aren't finished fortifying their defense and have reportedly expressed interest in bolstering their defensive backfield. If they require assistance making a significant move, one 49ers player is prepared to lend a helping hand. Last week, the Buffalo Bills released All-Pro cornerback Tre'Davious White, who appears to be an ideal fit for San Francisco's needs opposite Charvarius Ward. Over the weekend, Ward took to social media to reveal that he and White share the same agent and that he is willing to nudge the free-agent defensive back in the right direction. Ward described White as a "hand in glove
