What is AOL Instant Messenger?
AOL Instant Messenger is a free software program that lets you:
- Receive instant alerts
- Send instant messages
- Share photos, pictures and sounds
- Enjoy live conversations online - FREE
- Chat with friends and family or people with similar interests
- Stay on top of the news and stocks
It takes about 10 minutes to download this free program over a standard, 28.8 computer modem and telephone line. The installation process takes about three minutes, and it's easy to add your friends' screen names to your Buddy List. Then you're all set to send instant messages!
Existing AOL Members will only need to download and install AIM 4.0 inorder to use it. All non-AOL Members will be required to choose a screen name prior to downloading the free software.

You can get by with less, but we recommend you have at least:
- Pentium processor or PPC Macintosh
- Windows 95 or higher, WinNT4, Win2000 or Macintosh System 8.5 or higher.
- 16MB RAM
- 5MB of free hard drive space.
- 28.8 modem
- Internet connection that allows full Internet usage (not just a free email service).
- 800x600 resolution, 256 colors or more.
- Full duplex sound card (though Talk will work with half duplex).
